In March 2026, a Portuguese road maintenance contractor ordered eight 30-foot foldable prefab houses from YG for a six-month coastal road project in Algarve, southern Portugal. Work covered road surface repairs, retaining wall reinforcement, and coastal erosion control along N125-4 near Aljezur.

Road crews moved between several work sections during construction. Workers needed accommodation close to each section, while available land beside coastal roads remained limited. Local transport planning also had to account for narrow access roads, with some sections allowing less than 3.0 m of vehicle width.

Eight foldable houses formed a temporary camp. Seven units served as worker accommodation, while one unit provided space for daily meetings, work planning and site coordination.

Foldable Prefab House for Worker Accommodation

Worker accommodation needed to stay close to active road sections. A fixed camp would have remained in one location while crews continued moving along the route.

Seven houses provided temporary worker accommodation for sleeping and rest after each shift. One additional house served as a meeting room for daily briefings, schedule discussions and crew coordination.

A 30-foot layout gave workers enough indoor space for worker accommodation on construction sites while keeping each unit manageable during transport and relocation. Limited roadside land also made compact site planning important.

Some coastal sections had narrow approach roads and limited space beside active work areas. Delivery teams therefore planned access around local traffic conditions and positioned houses on prepared ground close to work zones.

Four workers could open and prepare one house in about four hours under normal site conditions. After positioning, crews connected utilities and completed basic interior preparation.

This arrangement gave road workers temporary accommodation without requiring permanent buildings for a six-month maintenance programme.

Transport became a major consideration for this foldable house for road construction as work moved along the coastal route. A full-size temporary building would have occupied more space during transportation and created additional access problems on narrow roads.

Each house travelled in folded form, making it suitable for portable accommodation for road workers. After reaching a prepared location, workers opened the structure, connected utilities and prepared the interior.

Camp relocation took place twice during the six-month project. Each move required about one working day, including preparation, transport and reopening work at the next location.

Road crews followed a simple relocation sequence:

  1. Complete scheduled work at one section.
  2. Prepare houses for transportation.
  3. Move folded units to a new prepared site.
  4. Open houses after arrival.
  5. Reconnect utilities and resume accommodation use.

Using the same eight houses throughout the project avoided the need to establish a new accommodation camp at every road section.

Relocation also kept living facilities closer to active work areas. Workers could move with construction activities instead of travelling long distances from a fixed camp.

Project work finished in September 2026 after six months of road maintenance. During this period, workers used seven houses as foldable prefab accommodation for construction sites, while one unit supported daily site meetings.

Two camp relocations took place as roadwork advanced. Each move took about one working day, allowing workers to continue using the same accommodation at a new location.

Miguel Ferreira, Site Manager described the result:

“We used 8 units for 6 months. Each relocation took about one day, and we could move accommodation with our road crew instead of arranging a new camp at every section.”

Close accommodation reduced unnecessary travel between living areas and active work zones. A separate meeting unit also gave supervisors a convenient place for daily coordination.

YG manufactures foldable prefab houses for construction, road maintenance and temporary site projects. Available options include different layouts, wall materials, electrical systems, bathrooms and air-conditioning equipment. YG also supports export preparation, transport coordination and technical communication before shipment.

For this coastal road project, a foldable structure combined accommodation, transport flexibility and relocation capability in one temporary road maintenance camp.
