A Fog Cannon is commonly used in quarries, construction sites, and material yards where dust is generated during crushing, loading, unloading, and stockpiling. By producing fine water mist and directing it toward dust sources, the equipment helps control airborne particles in open working areas. In Nairobi, Kenya, a quarry selected a YG-40 Fog Cannon for daily dust control. Peter Njoroge, the quarry supervisor, contacted YG Machinery because manual water hoses could not cover the changing dust sources efficiently during production.

The quarry runs for around 8 hours per day. Dust mainly came from the loading area and finished stone stockpile, which were located about 30–35 m apart. The customer needed equipment that could cover both areas while staying outside the main working route.

After checking the site conditions, YG Machinery selected the YG-40 model. Its 40 m spraying distance matched the required coverage, while the 360° horizontal rotation and -10° to 55° vertical adjustment allowed the operator to change the spray direction according to different working areas.

Dust Control Problems at a Kenyan Quarry

Before installing the fog cannon, workers controlled dust near the crushing and loading areas with water hoses. During busy periods, two workers needed to move the hoses and adjust the spraying direction according to the active dust area.

The hose method worked for nearby locations, but it became less convenient when the dust source changed. The loading point and stockpile were separated by more than 30 m, which meant workers had to move equipment during daily operations.

Wind direction also changed throughout the working day. Because dust did not always spread toward one fixed area, the quarry needed equipment that could adjust coverage from a fixed installation point.

Fog Cannon Selection for Quarry Dust Control

The fog cannon’s 360° horizontal rotation allows direction changes without moving the equipment. The vertical adjustment range also gives the operator more control when the dust source location changes.

The quarry already had a 380V/50Hz three-phase power supply, which matched the fog cannon’s electrical requirement. The water pump connects to the available site water source and supplies water to the 16 nozzles, while the fan carries the mist toward the target area.

Fog Cannon Operation in Daily Quarry Work

The YG-40 remains in one installation position during normal operation. Instead of transporting hoses between different locations, the operator adjusts the spray direction according to the current production activity.

During loading and unloading, the mist is directed toward the active loading point. When stockpiling becomes the main dust source, the operator turns the barrel toward the finished stone stockpile. Truck movement areas can also be covered by changing the spray direction when necessary.

The quarry uses the machine during dust-producing periods within its daily 8-hour schedule. However, the equipment does not operate at maximum water flow for the entire shift. Actual water consumption depends on operation time, weather conditions, and material handling activity.ust-producing periods within its 8-hour daily schedule. Dust Suppression Cannon Results After Installation

  • One unit covers the two main dust sources.
  • Workers no longer need to move hoses between working areas.
  • The operator can adjust the spray direction according to production activities.
  • The equipment stays outside the main traffic route while covering the dust sources.

The quarry did not install a dedicated PM10 monitoring system during this project. Therefore, the result is based on normal operating observations rather than a measured percentage reduction. Dust control performance can also change with wind speed, material moisture, particle size, and production conditions.

Customer Feedback on Quarry Dust Control

Peter Njoroge said:

“We do not need to drag the hose to the loading area anymore. We can turn the cannon toward the area that needs it.”

According to Peter, the main improvement was easier daily operation. The crew could keep the equipment in position and adjust the spray direction when the working area changed.s easier daily operation. Before installation, workers moved the hose between the dust sources. Now, they can keep the cannon in position and change its spray direction instead.
